Star Wars Clone Wars Deluxe At At Imperial Walker
The All Terrain Armored Transport, or AT-AT walker, is a four-legged transport and combat vehicle used by the Imperial ground forces. Standing a towering 15 meters tall, these walkers are intimidating, and are used as much for psychological warfare as they are for tactical effect. They are used by the Old Republic and the Galactic Empire for ground assault and transport. Imperial walkers have played a crucial role in the outcome of battles. Forged at the Kuat Drive Yards, the same production facility that crafted the Empire’s prodigious Imperial Star Destroyer, the AT-AT walker is the perfect embodiment of Imperial philosophy. It favors fear over function, as the immense craft is more a weapon of terror than a completely efficient combat vessel. Although its complex leg mechanisms do require constant maintenance and repair, the rugged walker does live up to its all terrain name, being able to plod through most obstacles. Industrial Light and Magic is responsible for their animation and design, often using models, stop-motion animation, and relevant matte paintings to depict their presence in the films.
Origin and design
Joe Johnston’s original creation for the Empire’s war machines was a giant, multi-wheeled vehicle. For Episode V, however, the final design was a legged. ILM created many models ranging from 6 to 50 centimeters in height. ILM filmed the AT-ATs using stop-motion animation. The people at ILM studied elephants to determine the best way to emulate the four-legged beasts. The stop-motion animation gave the AT-ATs a jerky effect on screen, ILM found this ok because the Imperial Walker is after all, a machine. The sound of the Star Wars AT AT Imperial Walker was created by Sound Designer Ben Burtt, by using the sound of an industrial metal stamper.
AT-ATs may look like animals, they are actually sofistocated war machines, carrying “extremely heavy armor and armaments”. Their armor is resistant to most standard blaster weapons, however, the “neck” column of the walker has a weak spot and, if shot, can cause the AT AT to be destroyed. The AT-AT is the primary assault vehicle during the Battle of Hoth, first seen in The Empire Strikes Back. In the film, the AT-ATs are responsible for destroying the shield generator protecting the Rebel headquarters, taking out many soldiers, vehicles. and installations in the process. One walker is destroyed when a Rebel Snowspeeder wraps a tow cable around the legs, causing its collapse. The Walker also makes an appearance in Ep. VI, Return of the Jedi, on Endor. There are tons of different walkers: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back introduces the All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) and All Terrain Scout Transport (AT-ST), while Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and the Star Wars Expanded Universe feature numerous others. AT AT Toys and Collectibles have been merchandised and featured in popular culture.
